Dear Cath:
Received your nice long epistle of 4th July a few days ago and am glad to know that everyone keeps well. Yes I’ve been up looking across at old Fritz again since writing last + have just come out again. The war still goes merrily on but there’s one consolation – it can’t last forever. We certainly have had a dandy time this summer tho! – a whole lot different to what it was last year.
While in the line this last trip I got Standards! What do you know about that? Got three one week + two the next. They had been held up somewhere and finally arrived “in force”. Was mighty pleased to see them too –always am of course, but especially so under the existing circumstances.
Say Cath. I received a letter from Bobe the other day. A most interesting missive it was too, in spite of the fact that it was rather short + to the point. Suppose you have heard the news – He expects to be home end of this month! I’m glad to hear that he is getting away at last. He should have been send back long ago. He certainly is a lucky guy tho’ in my estimation.
I haven’t seen anything of Lawrence just lately but I believe he is still carrying on as usual. Did you get the box he sent about a month ago? While he was on the way to mail it he dropped into my billet + asked if I had anything I would like to send home as there was still a little room so I added that card case to the contents of the parcel, taking the liberty to presume that you or Margaret wouldn’t mind handing it on to the folks. The chief contents of the thing are a bunch of railway & street car tickets which I accumulated while on leave so if it does happen to get lost it really won’t matter much.
So you think I might be able to land a job with your dad if I were home. Gee! I had an idea that men were pretty scarce over there – now I’m sure of it. Still, he might be able to get a dollar and ten cents worth a day out of me and I’d certainly rather earn that on the farm than over here.
And the Morpeth school board turned you down did they. That’s too bad. Still if you get on the staff of the R.P.S. it won’t be so bad after all will it. I imagine Marg. feels rather peeved about it though, eh what? She had been counting so much on you getting in out there.
Well so long. If I can’t manage to write again during the next 2 or 3 weeks I’ll drop you a card occasionally to let you know that everything’s O.K.
Kind regards to all the folks. Hope your ankle didn’t trouble you very long.
Yours truly,
Les
P.S. Pete Bowden wrote telling me he had had a letter from Art Blight. Art is now at the C.C.K.C – not very far from where we are at present. He hasn’t been attached to his new batt’n yet. C.C.K.C. – Corps Reinforcement Camp.
