June 11th [1918?]

Dear Cath:

Your two letters dated Apr. 25th & May 5th reached me last week and I am glad to know that everyone is well. Many thanks for the  snaps – they are all just fine.

So you think perhaps I don’t recognize “her”. Well you never made a bigger mistake in your life. I can’t see much change in either of you apparently F.O.C. has been quite agreeable for you both seem to be “in the pink.” Ethel & her hubby look just the same as ever too. Suppose they are settled on the farm now.

Our mail has been held up for nearly a month now but last week I got quite a pile of letters and papers. (including 3 “Standards” from you mother) Lawrence came round the same evening with some more papers & a letter from your mother and we spent a couple of hours going over the whole works & discussing them [?] together.

I think I told you before that I’ve been sleeping outside for about a month now. Never saw such a long spill of glorious weather before and there’s no sign of rain yet. I notice some of the grain is nearly ready for cutting – whether it’s wheat barley or rye I’m not enough of a farmer to say for sure.

I saw a cousin of mine on Sunday whom I have been trying to locate out here for over a year. The last time I saw him was at my uncle’s in Toronto just after I enlisted so you can imagine how pleased I was to meet him. While I was away on this visit I afterwards learned that an artilleryman had been around looking for me and I was wondering if it would be Jim. I think Jim and Lee Hancock are the only boys I know n the artillery so I think it must have been one of the two. I’ve never seen Lee out here and it must be nearly a year since I last saw him so I hope the fellow whoever he was calls again when I am [?] home. I rec’d a card from Jim about a month ago so I expect he is O.K. but I would like to have a talk with him again.

There are two baseball games & a football game being played today by different units of this brigade. The 13th are playing the brigade ([?] than this [?]. and our soccer team plays the 16th. I believe the 16th are to play our baseball team too. We are having a dandy time these days. In the afternoons all we have is sports and with such great weather everyone (including even the Brigadier) enjoys it.

I’m pleased to hear that you have such a fine boarding house (but come to think of it there’s no sense in writing that down for you’ll be leaving Toronto a week from Friday – long before this reaches you). However there’s no harm done in what I expect you will be a regular little card shark when [?] the old town again. Perhaps you’ll be willing to give me a few lessons.

Well it’s just dinner time so I guess I’ll have to ring off once more. Can’t think of anything more to tell you anyway. I wish you every success in your finals, Cath, but I haven’t any doubt as to how you will make out.

As ever,

Les.

P.S. No one is supposed to know what a shining star I used to be in Latin. Remember the time [Osgoode?] held me for half an hour every day one week for making 8% on one of his papers?
